Section one option one: Napier to Black Bridge by coach the start of your cycling day.

Section one option two: Riverbank and Coastal Pathway – Flat terrain 19.2kms

Cycling from Greenmeadows in Napier you will join the Tutaekuri Riverbank Pathway to Awatoto, turn right and follow the Pathway beside the sea to the village of Clive then East Clive to Black Bridge.

Section Two: Experienced Rider – Tuki Tuki Valley – 21.5kms  Cross Black Bridge and turn right onto the inland cycle pathway

At the start of this section you have a 10 kms ride on flat terrain, the next 15kms is a combination of winding hills to gentle elevation and flat terrain. In 2011 the Tuki Tuki Road had a huge makeover, realigning and widening – especially to keep cyclist safe.

Join the Tuki Tuki River bank pathway to Moore Road (6.8kms) then right into Tuki Tuki Road which has onroad cycling lanes in various places – meander along the flat terrain, around interesting bends, then windy hills and gentle elevation as you pass by rolling country side, vineyards, orchards and farmlands. Soak up the stunning panoramic views overlooking the Tuki Tuki River, Te Mata Peak and surrounding countryside.

At the bottom of valley, cross Red Bridge,  you will pass by an avenue of young Oak trees, then to Craggy Range Winery, a combination of flat and hilly terrain to Te Mata Road ( 2.6kms)

Section Three: Havelock North Wineries to Black Bridge 15kms

Coffee break at Chalk & Cheese Cafe, Explore Te Mata Estate Winery, Black Barn Vineyards, *Red Barrel, back track 3kms to River Road then join the Tuki Tuki Riverbank Pathway back to Black Bridge 7.7kms – where you will be collect.

Option: You have the option of staying for *dinner (your cost) at the end of your cycling day at #Craggy Range or #Black Barn.

Option: continue on the Pathways back to Napier via Clive and Awatoto pathways. (19.2kms).

Meander on your bike through this breathtaking countryside, experiencing a combination of windy valley roads, flat terrain, and gentle rolling hills with a surprise around every bend and of course the odd hill or two to climb, care needs to be taken when freewheeling downhill grades, there are plenty of these!

Puketitiri Road has a stunning panoramic view overlooking the old inner harbour and Napier in the distance; cycle past vineyards, orchards and farmlands to Seafield Road (16.5kms). Seafield Road winds down through a spectacular valley, home to beautiful mature trees and rolling farmland.

There are many Lifestyle blocks with large homes perched on the surrounding hills to capture the views, at the bottom of the valley floor you turn right into Hill Road (5.3kms- total 21.8kms).

Explore the village of Bay View, maybe a pint of ale at the Bay View Pub, or a glass of wine at Crab Farm Winery (7.8km – total 29.6km).

From here you have two options, either cycle the inland pathway past the Airport to Ahuriri Estuary – this important wetland is a sanctuary for a wide variety of wading birds – then still on the pathway continue towards the foothills to Church Road, or cycle via Beacons Reserve Pathway beside the sea, enjoy the suburb of Westshore then into the Village of Ahuriri for a coffee and bite to eat.(6.8km – total 36.4km).

Return via Prebensen Drive, Church Road is home to Penny Maddens Ceramics and Mission Estate Winery. Total 41.9km.

This is my favourite trail. Today’s ride includes flat terrain, gentle elevation and rolling hills, coasting downhill on a gentle grade. No pathways in Ohiti Valley. Bike one way (morning drop off) – 47.8km. Drop off and collection – 32km.

Coach drop at Fernhill Village, turn left onto Ohiti Road,  cycling through this picturesque valley floor is a sight to behold, you pass by rocky outcrops, farming flats; every bend the valley unfolds its secrets, and ever-changing panoramic vistas.  A little way along the valley floor widens to a multitude of immaculate vineyards sheltered by the rolling hills and the high river stock bank on your left. 

From “Tirohia Farm” (E on the map) you have the choices – Jenne can come and collect you 

Or continue your ride to complete the loop, a gentle elevation to climb – once at the top of the road you turn right onto Matipiro Road from here you are rewarded with a gentle downhill grade through this enchanting valley turning right onto  Taihape Road, which takes you back to the  village of Fernhill finish the day off at Zeffers Cidery   – Jenne will collect you from here.

Or continue along Swamp Road an enjoyable  ride through farms and orchards  as you make your way to the  Puketapu Village, detour to  Puketapu Park for a Ride on the flying fox, and maybe call into the Quaint  Puketapu Pub to quench your thirst  then onto  *Moana Park Winery,  join the Springfield River bank pathway which brings you back to Taradale , then onto Bike About Tours base.

NOTE: Other bikers have loved this area so much they took it upon themselves to explore further up the road and spent the entire day in the area… you need to take lunch – no shops.
